Alice Dobson

Alice Dobson was born in Huddersfield, England on 27th April 1911 and recently celebrated her 104th birthday with her family, friends and staff at Bethania Gardens. Born to Ben and Elizabeth Clough, Alice remembers her childhood fondly as being full of fun including dancing and playing the piano with her sister. Up until very recently Alice still went ballroom dancing every week – something she says has kept her very fit!

Alice recalls how her parents named her – they picked the name out of a hat as the family could not agree on a name!

Alice moved to Queensland in 1988, when she came on holiday to visit her daughter and in fell in love with Australia. Alice initially lived at Tamborine for a short period before eventually settling in Beenleigh – where she spent 25 very happy years – especially as the British shop was very close by so she could still get some of her favorite British foods!

We asked Alice if there was anything she missed about England and she said “The snow!” Brrrr!!

When the time came for Alice to consider moving into aged care she discussed it with her daughters and family and looked at various facilities before settling on Bethania Gardens. When asked why she chose Bethania Gardens, Alice said she likes the open spaces and gardens that are available for her to stroll around and the staff and other residents are very friendly - it feels like one big, happy family. She has her own room with her personal possessions around her – just like she had at home. Even though she is in an aged care facility Alice still enjoys the freedom of being able to go out at the weekend with her family to go shopping or visiting friends.

Alice is very proud of her achievements in life and says that she has had a fulfilling and contented life. She is especially proud of her many medals won representing the UK in Archery competitions both nationally and internationally and of course, her letter of congratulations received from the Queen to mark her 100th birthday.

We look forward to celebrating Alice’s 105th birthday at Bethania Gardens on 27th April 2016!
